interruptions

My final Rapid Response was inspired by a few things that really struck me yesterday. The first was a discussion we had of our daily reading in which we discussed the notion of “interruptions” in a city and their potential to create memories and experiences, whether good or bad. The other inspiration was a talk we attended at the Columbia Global Centers where writers from the Jordanian online alternative media platform “7iber” talked to us about their work and their website being recently blocked by the state. I then  remembered discussing a local design magazine by the name of “Interruptions” whose website had also been recently blocked. With all these thoughts in mind, I altered the logo of this magazine and used different images that reflect personal experiences of “interruptions” in the city as the background. This symbolizes the spatial, social, and political interruptions that are affecting Jordan presently.

grafitti

In line with the graffiti and typography trend that has been sweeping Amman, I took parts of photos that I have taken in the past few days and abstracted them to create a composition that I think could fit in well with the art being drawn on the city’s surfaces.

While exploring Jabal Amman and Rainbow Street in search of a site, our own group interaction sparked ideas for the concept of our Public Bit.

One of the things that always catches my attention while exploring Downtown Amman is the congestion of various repeating elements. From beads, to steps, to stones, to ancient ruins, to traffic jams, and even the residents themselves, it’s a stimulating urban chaos that constantly keeps your senses busy.
